From proteins to proteomics and functional protein networks and vice versa
Our group of Functional Proteomics and Systems Biology headed by Assoc. Prof. Michalis Aivaliotis is focusing on the study of protein functional networks and pathways in complex biological systems. For that purpose we use integrative Systems Biology approaches employing state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based proteomics and bioinformatics in combination to other methods of omics, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and analytical biochemistry.
Our ultimate goal is to better understand the relation between proteins’ structure, function, interactions and modifications to different phenotypes in several cellular systems and organisms. We zoom in and out on the complex biological networks on molecular level towards a better understanding of physiological and pathological conditions that will lead to better prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of complex diseases, such as cancer, chronic kidney disease and neurodegenerative disorders.
